Zero-click Search

A search that ends on the results page because the answer is shown there, so the user never clicks through to a website.

In plain terms

You search for the weather in Izmir and the temperature appears at the top of the page. You have what you came for and you close the tab. Nobody's website was visited. The same now happens with far more complex questions, because AI summaries answer them directly on the results page.

Why it matters

For any business that depends on search traffic, this breaks a long-standing link between ranking and visits. A page can keep its position and lose a large share of its clicks. Studies have estimated that well over half of Google searches end without a click to another site, and AI summaries push that further for informational questions. The response is to measure differently and to offer something a summary cannot replace.

Example

A travel site ranks first for “Japan visa requirements”. Impressions hold at 40,000 a month while clicks fall from 9,000 to 5,200, after an AI summary begins to answer the question on the results page. The site is one of the cited sources. The team starts to track citations and brand searches, and adds an interactive visa checker that brings visitors a summary cannot serve.

Most often confused with

Zero-click Search vs. A drop in rankings

Zero-click SearchYou still rank; the click no longer happens
A drop in rankingsYou rank lower, so fewer people see you

Both show up as falling traffic, and they call for opposite responses. A ranking drop is fixed by improving the page. Zero-click loss happens with the page still at the top: look for stable impressions and position with a falling click-through rate.

Under the hood

Zero-click results come from direct answers (weather, calculations, definitions), featured snippets, knowledge panels, local map results, “People also ask” boxes, and AI Overviews and AI Mode. Chat assistants are the extreme case: there is no results page at all. To diagnose, compare impressions, average position and click-through rate over time in the search console, split by query type; informational queries are hit hardest, transactional and navigational ones least. Complementary measures: citations in AI answers, referral visits from AI assistants, brand search volume and conversions. Strategies: aim to be the cited source, publish what cannot be summarised away (tools, original data, depth, community), build direct channels such as newsletters, and treat a visible, accurate mention as a result in its own right.
